Salvation Road

the road paid for
my freedom—

once i stopped
believing in
fairy tales—

that was all
i had left of my soles.

born into the far
opposite of slavery,

when I wept,
gold chains clattered
to the ground

three girls cried,
but it had
nothing to do
with me.

i was as free
to the road as
it was to see.
